After the tackle The Girne American University (GAU)’s Basketball Team beat its opponent The European University of Lefke (EUL), 93-71, in the Basketball Championship between Universities and wrote their name in gold letters by continuing their championship series.

GAU continued its championship series since last year by becoming champions again this year in the final match between Girne American University (GAU) - European University of Lefke (EUL) with the score of 92-71, which took place in Güzelyurt Sports Hall.

The match that ended with the score of 92-71, the most scorer was Alpay Serbetcioglu with 23 scores, followed by Ali Erdem Tiryakioglu with 19 scores, Batuhan Tuzmen with 16 scores and Halit Celiktaslilar with the score of 14. On the defences, Bert Beyaz and Tugberk Aybars’  individual performances had a great impact on the matches final result.

After the championship, GAU’s Basketball Team Head Trainer Gökay Iskar made a statement;

“First of all, this is a success for our family. We wanted to give an early new year present by wining this championship. We are happy to be the champions again in the branch of male basketball between universities’ sports games. We worked very hard to get this result and we thank the entire school administration for supporting us. This victory belongs to our players. We have no time to lose, we have to concentrate on our next league match. In my players’ busy schedule, they showed what characteristic sportsmen they really are. We work on every moment that will turn anything to do with our opponents, to our advantage. The most important thing about basketball is to be a team.”

In Mr. Iskar’s statement, he also said; “ Even though EUL, a very good and respectable team, gave us a head start they managed to catch up and  even up the scores. However in our remaining time, our game picked up the beat which was positively reflected in our true shooting percentage. The game was in our control with the increase of our firm defence and gave us this result.”
