A cinema excitement at Girne American University Faculty of Communication, is made from a cinema man who brought excitement to the faculty.
Cyprus-born director Derviş Zaim spare a portion of his life dedicated to cinema to teaching with his own words “We are learning mutually; teaching, learning, they’re two-sided”, thoughts and emotions.
In 2016-2017 Academic Year, he joined Teaching Staff of GAU Faculty of Communication and he’s doing this teaching matter voluntarily for his own homeland. Zaim, when the subject comes to filmic matters, he explains them like this; “We saw the excitement of the students as always, I’m happy to share this excitement. We are trying to learn mutually as much as we can. Teaching and learning is always two-sided and I believe this. I’m happy to start giving lessons at GAU. We try to give a lecture about communication, cinema, television. These subjects are actually among the musts of our time. No matter what you did, if you can’t express yourself, you can’t realize your own representation forms. The world condemns you to a one way and unfortunately, you keep your head above water under the negative conditions. This obstructs to flourish spiritually. Communication faculties, cinema television departments are there for this aim. I, on my behalf; as a soldier of this, I try to help to GAU and Cyprus in here”.
“IF PRACTICE AND THEORY DOESN’T GO ON TOGETHER, WE MEET TOO MANY “UTTERLY IGNORANT” PEOPLE WHO USE THE CAMERA QUITE GOOD OR FICTIONALIZE WELL.
“ The more they practice, the better, but practice must not be fetishized. Some universities, teachers, students and especially the students care about practice too much. I care about practicing too, I’m also giving lectures about practicing. For example, I want students to make a film at the end of the lectures. However, theory also should go on together with practice. Otherwise, we meet too many utterly ignorant people who use camera and fictionalize quite well. This, too, has very grave consequences. Practicing must go on together with theory. One of them should always be supportive for the other one. Achieving this is very difficult but I think this model will be successful. One of the things I try to do humbly is this.”
Derviş Zaim, who always says that students shouldn’t be desperate and wait for bad criticism; “There are no such things as analyzing, resuming the processes and drawing a conclusion from these processes anymore. But categorically, even if these things happen, this doesn’t mean that the students can’t do anything. What really matters is to build the system, make the system people-oriented, to try to build a system which is interactive with the environment and to try to build an open system. When this happen, positive consequences will eventually occur. We shouldn’t wait for it quickly.”
