Girne American University (GAU) School of Nursing is marking a new era in educating medical personnel with the high technology Nursing and Midwifery laboratories

Director of GAU School of Nursing, Assist. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Avcı stated that they offer service in midwifery department with the renewed laboratories and provide the opportunity of doing practical works on models.

Avcı continued; “By this way, our students are able to see the behaviors of a mother when giving a birth. Although they cannot see the situation of a baby during a delivery, they can imagine it and watch the moment of birth one-to-one. With the theoretical trainings and the births they experience in the hospitals after their 3th year, our students start to take charge in the hospitals as GAU graduates who are well-informed and have experience in practical works. They deliver at least 40 children until their graduation.”

Proud steps

Avcı emphasized that steps of GAU on health sector are a source of pride and referred that “I would like to say on behalf of us the academicians and our students that we are the only university that will graduate midwifery students. Nowadays, midwifery is more in demand, in hospitals or private nursing clinics a midwife is always needed to be with the attending physician. This profession became much more attractive with midwives.”

Avcı, who remarked that Ministry of Health needs more midwifery in TRNC and necessity of midwife in Turkey grows day by day, stated the followings; “I do not think that our students will have a difficulty in finding a job as the more a midwife is experienced, the more she will be preferred. Thus, we attach great importance to our trainings and educate our students with the developed background opportunities in our laboratories.”

Strong academician cadre

Avcı underlined that GAU School of Nursing has a strong academician cadre and with the developed background opportunities, it offers great modern possibilities and continued as follows;

 “When the hospital of GAU opens to public, our students will start to take high level applied education. We will balance the opportunities we give at the moment in the laboratories with the practical one-to-one works. Therefore, when they graduate, our students will be equipped, well-informed and experienced.”

Avcı, who pointed out that Kyrenia has a great importance in terms of tourism and population and structuring are increasing day by day, finished his speech by stating; “GAU is a great occasion for Kyrenia. It is very important especially for foreigners and tourists to get a high-standard health service, when tourists go to a hospital in a country, first thing they do is to compare it with the health sector of their countries. I am sure that we will always have positive points. Our country and people will have a hospital that has high-level standards. This fills us with pride; we watch the steps GAU take for living a healthy life, with a huge appreciation.”
