“Young minds must take part in the process”
GAU Founding Rector Akpınar emphasized that improvement of bureaucracy is hindered:
Girne American University (GAU) Founding Rector and Chancellor of Board of Administrators Serhat Akpınar indicated that bureaucracy has turned into a structure that hinders the improvement in TRNC and he said that “New steps must be taken in order to alter this, and young minds must take part in this process.”
Steps must be taken
Akpınar, at “Günün Getirdikleri” program, aswered the question which was about his indication about politics over the social media and he said that “Firstly, that period had very different reflection on us, and I lived different excitement at that period. There were some problematic processes that came from the past and couldn’t connect to the future and that raised in the bureaucracy. Some steps must be taken, new faces, younger brains must take part in this process.”
Legal struggle is continuing
Akpınar answered this question “As a Girne American University a legal struggle is lived and what is the final situation?” and he said that “It is not a finished case. It wouldn’t be right if I speak because the case is in progress currently. We know that we utterly right as a Girne American University. Decision was issued from the High Administrative Court, that decision wasn’t enforced and although that decision wasn’t enforced there is a lawsuit process that we have brought an action from TRNC Council of Ministers to previous government that gave support to the related higher education institution by taking different names. They accepted our defense statement and they listened the opposite side. We watch the process closely, judicial process is continuing.”
Projects are in progress
Akpınar gave information about plans and projects of Girne American University in 2016. He said that “As you know, targets of Girne American University are so big and all-purpose; we are not only in the island. 2016-2017 is much important for GAU as you know because our hospital will be opened.”
Limitation is not a solution
GAU Founding Rector Akpınar answered this question “There are 23 permission obtained universities in the island and this is known, do you think limitation is needed here?” and he said that, it is needed to look who opened these institutions instead of the limitation. It is needed to look who will be allowed and who will fulfill the conditions.”
Universities raise the student number
Akpınar answered this question “Higher education is one of the areas that may grow the fastest with a possible solution, in this point, is the sector ready for this?” and he said that “Minister of education mentioned this as well. Our governments say that they have raised student number until today. Indeed, universities raise this number. With these introductions universities not only introduce their universities but also they introduce Cyprus in 130 countries. In this hard period, for example, there are some quotas that embassies are put when permitting foreign students in the island. Some universities permit students in without taking these quotas into consideration and this affects island’s future both positively and negatively.”
