At the study, which lasted 2 years and were nearly 300 students participated in, archival materials were transported from the old building to the new building in order to be classified and a healthy archival system was created by reclassifying microfilm, map and other important materials

Girne American University (GAU) Faculty of Education, Turkish Language and Literature Lecturer Zeki Akçam, gave information about the studies of transporting the data, which belongs to the Presidential National Archive Department, to the new building, filing of the documents transported and transferring them to the numerical environment.

Stressing that the transferring studies has been conducted under the community service lessons with the GAU Turkish Language and Literature Department, Department of Psychological Counseling and Guidance and Computer Teacher students, Akçam, explained that the studies took about 4 years. Stating that they gave a certificate of appreciation to the Faculty of Education students for these services they have made within the scope of community service lesson, Zeki Akçam, expressed that they performed studies in four different areas and that firstly they transferred the written works and old newspapers, which were located in the microfilm section, to numerical environment and that following these they classified the private collections donated to the Map section and to the National Archive.

Akçam, who stressed that as GAU Faculty of Education they are serving to National Archive, where written and visual archival materials of both Turk and Greek side are stored, for about four years, gave the following information’s regarding the studies:

Transportation of the Archival Materials to the new building from the old building

Our three department has supported these studies and for 2 years, with nearly 300 students, archival materials in the old building has been moved to the new building in order to be classified.

Classification of the transported materials

The files, which were transported to the new building or brought to the archives, are filed and placed in a rack together with the National Archive Staff. These studies of ours are still continuing. Besides, thousands of books, such as novels and story books detected as a result of the classification made in the National Archive, has been donated to various public schools.

The transferring of the Rare Books and Archival Materials to Numerical environment

Rare books, such as writings and population registry etc., together with newspapers, located within the National Archive, have been transferred to numerical environment. Besides that, the works, which were not checked and page numbered, have been checked. These studies of ours are also continuing.

The transferring of the Photograph and Postcard Archives to Numerical environment

Thousands of photographs and postcards found in the National Archive are being transferred to the Numerical Environment. The study of transferring the postcards has been finished while the study of transferring the photograph archive continues.

Internship Program

We are making internship programs ranging between 60 and 100 hours with the collaboration of National Archive and GAU. In this way, our students are learning the archive and being an archivist. As a result of their services, an internship certificate is presented to them. This project of ours is also continuing.

Studies of establishing the Verbal Archive

Besides, Akçam, who stated that they started the study of establishing an "Official verbal culture archive", which will be a first in TRNC, expressed that they have completed the initial classification of the Monograph works made since 2004 and they will open this archive, which exceeds 7000 minutes, to the researchers service as a result of the studies, which will last for two years.

Akçam, who also made a call to the public willing to contribute to the verbal archive, stated that "We want our people to contribute to the documents regarding all the information and certificate about the verbal and written culture of the Turkish Cypriot community."

Akçam stated in his statement that, they got a lot of attention and help from National Archive Department Director Gökhan Şengör and his staff during this project and thus the interest and attention to the archive has increased.
