In the TV program he attended, Girne American University (GAU) Rector Prof. Dr. Sadık Ulker made an important statement about the garbage dump which is decided to be built in Kyrenia.

Ulker questioned the reasons of the decision and recorded that this decision would affect not only GAU but also cause many troubles for the whole Cyprus, especially for Kyrenia, universities would be influenced by this decision and there is no explanation made by the Minister of Education and YODAK, however an explanation is expected from them.

“HOW LOGICAL IT IS TO BUILD A GARBAGE DUMP IN KYRENIA?”

Ulker reminded that the 4th university is about to established in Kyrenia and underlined that building a garbage dump near GAU would be a bad decision and continued; “Kyrenia is referred to the capital of tourism in Cyprus, it also has many

green fields and the 4th university which is planned to be in Kyrenia is about to established. Our historical buildings are countless. As if there is no other area in Cyprus, now it is planned to build a garbage dump in Kyrenia and approximately 400 meter forward from Girne American University. How logical it is to build a garbage dump in the forests that located in there and gives the breathe of Kyrenia?”

“WILL THERE A GARBAGE DUMP IN THE CAPITAL OF TOURISM?”

Ulker invited the Minister of Education to do something about this issue by referring; “Will there a garbage dump in the capital of tourism? We consider TRNC as an education island and our Minister of Education needs to do something about this issue. Thanks that our Minister of Environment is more sensible and have a negative attitude, however, as far as I am concerned, he is the only one who has negative thoughts regarding this issue.”

“WE SHOULD PROTECT OUR COUNTRY TOGETHER”

Ulker: “We should protect our country together. Along with the environment decimation, there would be other potential problems. There is living creatures who will suffer from smelling, and a fire can break out. When doing something, we need to prepare many substructures. If there is need for a garbage dump, we need to analyze very good to decide where to build it”

“THOSE WHO THINK THAT I AM DOING WRONG FOR GIRNE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY ARE ACTUALLY DOING WRONG FOR THEMSELVES”

Ulker: “The biggest responsibility is on our statesmen, they need to be more sensible in this issue. They can think much more simple alternatives. Causing disadvantages for Girne American University does not serve anybody. Eventually, no university should be in a bad condition in this issue, there should not be a bad publicity. If some people think that I am doing wrong for GAU, they are the ones who are doing wrong for themselves”

“IF WE MAKE KYRENIA A DUMP CITY, WE WOULD ONLY HINDER OURSELVES”

Ulker who mentioned about the economic contributions of a university being in Kyrenia stated that “Tradesmen thanks us whenever we come across. We have a great contribute to economy. 1.5 billion dollars income of the country comes from universities. We are the biggest university in Kyrenia. Our government needs to take things into account more carefully. We talk about educational policy but it does remain unfulfilled. Still there is no real government policy that has been developed. If we make Kyrenia a dump city, we would only hinder ourselves”

“YODAK SHOULD BE EQUAL FOR EVERY UNIVERSITY”

Ulker answered the question of “Does YODAK strike an attitude in this issue?” and recorded as follows; “They have not done something by now however I hope that they will. Any university getting damaged means that YODAK and the country will also get damaged. YODAK should be equal objectively for all universities and should stake out a claim for every university”
