GAU Academisions Discussed The Art in Details

Vice-Dean of the Girne American University (GAU) Architecture, Design and Fine Arts Faculty Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Adil and Vice Chairman of the Painting Department Sibel Kemal Uzun, made statements about the art.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Adil, Vice-Dean of the GAU Architecture, Design and Fine Arts Faculty, in his statement about the location of the art today, stated the followings;

“In artistic initiatives, we mostly see the ones which are composed amongst ourselves in Cyprus. At every layer of life and also in the art world, our country is interrupted because of the Embargo and having no recognition internationally. However, there is an attempt in this situation and it is constantly evolving. When we say art, what is our understanding of it? Are we talking about ancient traditional art or are we talking about painting, sculpture and theater. These are very important. The jointly developed formations, which are from different areas, establishing a relationship with each other, are very nutritious. From both logically and intellectually directions. Architecture and fine arts is under one roof in our faculty. Very positive developments are going on. Because there are joint works, which came up from different fields coming up together. Our latest exhibition, no3, was held in February. An old house was used as a venue. Both students and lecturers came together to organize an exhibition. Of course it was very different from the general exhibitions. It was not the idea of pictures hanging on the walls. All of our friends walked around the house. An exhibition was created based on the personal feelings and the feelings in the past. The result was positive and the viewers, who were there, has faced with constant surprises.”

Sibel Kemal Uzun, Acting Head of the GAU Architecture, Design and Fine Arts Faculty Painting Department, stated the followings about exhibitions held within the faculty;

“In fact, we do not interfere with the house that we performed the exhibition in, at all. It was a place that was emptied 20 years ago and we want to use it as the people who lived there left it. In the previous days, we held an exhibition at a church in Karmi region. It was an exhibition where there were mainly students. When we look at our world today with the same considerations and same feelings as an artist and designer, we provide it to the public based upon what might we do as a contribution and with the results from the first research we did to overcome our own horizon and experience. About the two exhibitions, we received very interesting responses from the people. They found it very interesting and in fact impressions like acquainting with new feelings emerged.”
