ATTENTION FROM GAU FACULTY MEMBER DENIZ, WHO DREW ATTENTION TO THE PROBLEMS IN THE TRANSITION TO ADOLESCENCE

Sound communication with an adolescent is very important

Girne American University (GAU) Faculty of Education lecturer Assist. Prof. Dr. Metin Deniz has made important statements in the TV program he participated on adolescence issues and adolescence-family relationships.

Deniz who highlighted the importance of adolescence, which is accepted as the second 10 years of life, has stated the following:

“Adolescence can be defined as the second half of life. There are certain limits on when the puberty begins and ends. Different perspectives on the transition to adolescence to adulthood have been introduced. For example, growth is accepted as puberty from the biological perspective, while separation from parents is considered as the beginning of puberty from the point of view of emotional.”

Metin Deniz who referred to the development process of puberty, explained as; “To understand how adolescents develop in contemporary society, it is necessary to understand their living environment and how it affects their social relations. For this, we need to look at the contexts which adolescents live in such as family, the peer groups, school and their social activities.”

How to recognize the adolescence

Assist. Prof. Dr. Metin Deniz who addressed to the issue of how to understand when the children are in adolescence, stated that; “Parents can understand that their child entered into this period by monitoring the physical, cognitive and psychosocial changes. For example, since adolescents tend to head with their peer group, they may no longer want to spend a lot of time with their parents. Since the most important effort of this period is gaining a healthy identity, the adolescents will need to create a unique space for themselves, the need of gaining autonomy will increase, the efforts of building positive relationships with the opposite sex will increase and will start to demonstrate appropriate behavior suitable with their exemplary role models. In this case, it is very important that parents respect their requirements.”

Communication with an adolescent is important

Deniz drew attention to the fact in his speech that trust is the most important point of communication with adolescent and healthy communication will be formed as long as adolescent trust in their parents, and stated as; “A polarization will form if the adolescent does not communicate well with the family and the rupture process starts to from as a result.”

"Parents should avoid criticizing the adolescent constantly. Continuous praise or criticism may cause the adolescent to display inconsistent behavior. The important thing is to be against their negative behaviors if exists, not their personality and communication should be carried out on their behavior, not on their way of thinking and emotions. Parents should observe the adolescent’s major circle of friends with a healthy manner and establish a healthy communication by displaying democratic attitude, using empathy against possible risk factors to form a relationship based on trust and giving examples from their own lives if necessary.”

Busses Issue

Metin Deniz who touched upon the recent issue of detention of the GAU busses in the custom on a question in the program has stated that; "One of the biggest complaints of the students in the TRNC, which are the main source of revenue, is associated with transportation. At a time where targeted to reach 110 thousand when there are currently 72 thousand students, no delivery of the GAU busses is provocative. Because, if the collective happiness of students is not achieved, then individual happiness on our island will also be hard to achieve. I hope that competent authorities will be aware and take appropriate action.”
