GAU Students Digitize Ottoman Archives

Girne American University (GAU) Faculty of Education, Turkish Language and Literature Teaching Department students continues to transfer Ottoman Turkish manuscripts to a digital platform


Girne American University (GAU) Faculty of Education, Turkish Language and Literature Teaching Department continues to serve the community and its memory.

 

GAU Faculty of Education, Turkish Language and Literature Teaching Department students continues to digitize Cyprus Ottoman Turkish and Arabic manuscripts in the TRNC National Archives Office. In this context, said students Tugba Balcı, İrem Gizem Şahin and Feyza Demirci digitized the artifacts in “Rare Books Department" in the Department of National Archives microfilm section under the auspices of Lecturer Zeki Akcam and Director of the National Archives Gökhan Şengör.

 

The statement from GAU states that the Ottoman Empire artifacts belong to Cyprus and the folio numbers of artifacts were given a start then transferred to the digital platform. Within the scope of the work that lasted a semester, the students were given an "internship" certificate as a result of their 100 hours work and also the statement indicated that the National Archives is the memory of both the community and that they will provide any possible support to help this memory become permanent as GAU. Furthermore, it was stated that they provide opportunities for the Turkish Language and Literature Department students to develop themselves due to the value they give to personal development and that they will continue to organize this type of activities regularly each term.
