Head of GAU Public Relations Department Terkan Talked About Women And Childre's Rights

Head of Girne American University (GAU) Communication Faculty, Public Relations Department Remziye Terkan has made a statement regarding the "Women`s Rights and Violence against Women" topic which is on top of the media in recent days.

 

Assist. Prof. Dr. Remziye Terkan stressed that women`s rights should be applied equally without any gender discrimination, underlining violence against is an important issue women as well as women`s and children`s rights, stated that communication and publication organs have a major role on the elimination of violence, which is one of the biggest obstacles in order to maintain a healthy social life.

 

Terkan pointed out that anything based on sex, harms and hurts women, that may result in physical, sexual, psychological damage, all sorts of behavior which causes in society or private life and restricting women’s freedom arbitrarily is cosidered an element of violence, stated that being now more accessible in the communication field with emerging technologies and many personal and private information shared in social media unconsciously increase the tendency for this type of violence and oppression.

 

"Our women who are exposed to violence cannot reveal this problem because of social pressure, are unable to express themselves, do not think they could find a solution, do not give voice, stay silent and condone to this violence."

 

Terkan who pointed out that violence is not only physical but also verbal and psychological, underlined that there are responsibilities of father and mother as parents about the children`s rights in the family, stated that families also should be educated about the children and emphasized that they not only provide academic information but also help children grow as conscious and respectful individuals throughout their lives as GAU. Terkan also referred to the importance of training provided by caregivers in this process, emphasized that caregivers and families should be in a harmonious relationship and the training received at home and educational institutions should be parallel with each other.
