A seminar on “Constitutional Problems in TRNC” was organized by the Faculty of Business and Economy, GAU was held.

Taner Erginel, former TRNC Supreme Court President and lecturer at GAU participated as a speaker at the seminar, which was held at the Millenium Congress Hall, North Cyprus campus of GAU.

“There is a Need for a new Constituition”

Stating that 1960 Constitution of Republic of Cyprus has not been in use after a short-term functioning, Erginel said the Greek Cypriots forced the Turkish Cypriots live under hard conditions isolating them with efforts to annexing Cyprus to Greece inspite of the fact that the 1960 Constitution was based on the participation of both Turkish and Greek Cypriots, human rights, rights of liberal democracy, equality of both communities, and implementation of executive, legislative and judiciary organs.

Erginel said that after the proclamation of the TRNC, the 1961 Constitution of the Republic of Turkey was accepted and it became difficult to change it afterwards and there is now a need for a new, flexible, short and liberalist constitution for the development of the society.

Erginel further stated that the current constitution bans the constructional development in the coastal areas and the ban was broken by the vialotions and frauds.
