GAE: People of Kyrenia demand the Port back

Kyrenia Research Institute which operates under Girne American University (GAU) presented the satisfaction survey prepared by Kyrenia City Assembly.

Kyrenia Research Institute (GAE) identified the expectations of those living in the city of Kyrenia with two surveys held last week by Kyrenia City Assembly. According to the research results presented to Kyrenia City Assembly, people living in Kyrenia still want to enjoy at the town centere and resolve their social needs in the city. The students, who chose Kyrenia for higher education, seem satisfied with the security in the city. Students complained about issues such as transport and accommodation facilities.

According to a survey by the Kyrenia Research Institute, 87.3% of the people use the city of Kyrenia for navigation and 60.5% of the population in the city demand a pedestrianised area. Contrary to expectations, 65.7% of the city people stated that they went to Kyrenia harbour in the last three months and 25.6% stated that they prefer to spend time in the Port.

The fact that the people of Kyrenia do not want schools as well as government departments to be moved from the city centre, emerged as one of the most striking results of the research.  67.8% of the people of Kyrenia want government departments and 65.3% of the people want schools to remain in the city centre.

The GAE officials who stated that this data must be evaluated as a whole, expressed that the results of the research shows "The people demanded the rearrangement of the old harbour of Kyrenia and its surrounding town centre and its reintegration to the public."

Expectations of the Public and Students

Expectations of Kyrenia people and students in higher education have been examined with the survey conducted by the GAE.  Accordingly, most Kyrenia people complain about the lack of public transport followed by complaints about health and sewers. The people seem to be satisfied with the water, garbage collection and cleaning services.

It was revealed that the students, who live in Kyrenia, are satisfied with the security in the city, their first priority being security.

Likewise to the people of Kyrenia, students who live in Kyrenia also complained of public transportation. In the research, it was revealed that the public transportation service is the least satisfying service. The second least is accommodation. Lack of adequate health facilities and services in the city is the third.

In the related statement from GAE, it was stated that the students who live in Kyrenia are satisfied with personal and public safety and that safety is the first priority of students and is the good news. It was emphasized that the bad news is that they were not satisfied with the public transportation in Kyrenia and that there is a serious problem with accommodation.
