IELTS seminar
On 14 November 2014, as part of Teachers’ Continuous Development Programme, three teachers from Girne American University attended the IELTS seminar, titled “Teaching Strategies for Meeting Learner Needs in IELTS”, which was presented by Mary Spratt, at Holiday Inn Hotel, in Nicosia. Theseminar introduced a series of teaching strategies for teachers working with IELTS students, and a course book, to help them apply these strategies. The strategies were based on responding to learners` needs rather than exam needs, suggesting how developing language proficiency can be customized to the exam and the learner. The seminar provided teachers with an alternative approach to teaching towards IELTS,highlighted a series of teaching strategies that are based on recognition of the importance of developing different aspects of learners` language proficiency and emphasized the consideration of learner needs and the development of language proficiency as essential tools in helping students achieve higher scores in the IELTS exam.
